The Slurp, Treasure, Avoid! quest
Join me in my mission to right some wrongs and save your cash too!
Have you ever wondered whether you were being ripped off
when you see a special offer sign for a wine you’re buying?
Were you aware that the supermarkets sell over 80% of the wine consumed across the country and over 75% of that is special offer wine? Did you know that over 60% of this is cynically produced for the special offer only and has no real value above the reduced price it is being sold for? Did you also realize that over 87% of wine writers never stoop to pen a review of these wines, leaving the public at the mercy of the supermarkets? Shocking stuff I’m sure you’ll agree!
My lawyer says I ought to point out that over 31% of my facts are supposition and wlould not hold up in court! Nevertheless, I think it's time for Slurp, Treasure, Avoid!: a critical look at special offer wines to see if there are any real bargains to be had out there.
I began my quest two weeks ago with a camera in my local Waitrose - more on the blog – and since then I’ve been thrown out of Tesco twice and have been caught in the act at Co-op and I’m beginning to realize the enormity of my what’s facing me. Am I to encounter what seems to me a flagrant abuse of shoppers’ trust each time I conduct a wine review? I now wonder if I’m up to the task of lifting the lid on the whole rotten barrel of apples, or vat of grapes, or any other tortured analogy I can think of, alone and I’ve decided I need help (others have said the same). So I’m calling on you to: tweet / facebook / or email me with your own findings.
So help me…
If you have found a special offer wine you think is great, let me know and I’ll compile a list to be posted, quoting you if you like. If you think you’ve been ripped off, I’ll post it too…but you can choose to remain anonymous! You’ll be able to see what others have thought was great value too.
Let me know: wine name / regular price / price discounted to
...and your verdict: slurp (good value quaffer) / treasure (great, a top wine) / avoid! (you can guess!)
